First Date Conversation Topics

Why hire a dating coach

Let's dive right into the dating world! As a dating coach, I often get asked about what to talk about on a first date. Sometimes, my intelligent and lovely clients share their planned topics with me after we've reviewed their profiles... and I must say, I'm a bit shocked.

I always give my clients direct advice. No, no, no. You can't say that! After all, I want you to meet "the one" and make a great impression.

1. The Past

Earlier today, I had a call with a new client at 7:30 am. She went on a first date last Saturday that turned into a 4 ½ hour lunch, followed by a walk and a bit of shopping. Now, here's the interesting part. Her date asked about her ex, and her response was perfect. She said, "I want to talk about you—let's stay in the present." Guess what? They already have a second date scheduled! Well done.

2. The Dating Site/App

Do you really care how long your date has been on the app or site? Or how many dates they've been on? If not, then don't ask. Trust me, it can come off as a bit weird. My ex-husband used to get asked that all the time, and he found it strange. My fiancé, whom I met on a dating app, had been on it for 4 years. Sometimes he even forgot he had it! So, let's not make it a topic of discussion.

3. What Are You Looking For? Oh, this question... Please, please, please don't ask it. You've read their profile or bio, right? You're not planning to marry this person next week, are you? It's just an uncomfortable question to ask on a first date.

4. No Interviewing

Remember, you're not an executive recruiter sending your date on a job interview. Avoid bombarding them with questions about their career/previous dates, etc. Let's keep the conversation light and enjoyable.

5. Movies, Concerts, Books, Vacations, Current Events

Stay up-to-date with the news on the day of your date. Talk about recent movies, concerts, books, or vacations you've enjoyed. Like are Taylor and Travis for real? Just kidding. (Avoid discussing controversial topics like politics (Trump/Biden) on the first date. Let's keep it fun and engaging.

That's all for today. Oh, and here's an article on dating that you might find interesting: Click here
