5 Weird Truths Nobody Tells You About Online Dating

I've learned something after watching 33,000 first dates unfold over 30+ years: online dating has the logic of airport security, Costco on a Saturday, and your GPS when it suddenly says, "Recalculating." It doesn't always make sense—but once you understand its quirks, everything gets easier.
1. Your Future Partner Is Probably Sitting in Your "No" Pile.
After 33,000 first dates, I've learned one thing the hard way:
People are remarkably bad at predicting attraction from a profile.
The person you'll someday introduce as "the love of my life" may be someone you'd swipe left on today.
That's weird.
But it happens all the time.
2. Your Brain Is Dating Long Before You Are.
You exchange six messages...
...and suddenly you're imagining Christmas, introducing them to your friends, and wondering if they'd like Tuscany.
Slow down.
Don't let your imagination get six dates ahead of reality.
3. Most People Decide About You Before They Read a Single Word.
Your photos are your movie trailer.
Your profile is the feature film.
If the trailer doesn't make them curious, they'll never buy a ticket.
4. Chemistry Is the Most Overrated Thing in Online Dating.
There. I said it.
I've seen explosive chemistry disappear after two dates.
I've seen "pleasant enough" become forty years together.
Stop looking for fireworks.
Look for someone you'd actually enjoy getting stuck in traffic with.
5. Online Dating Has Seasons.
August is planting.
October is harvesting.
November is couples' season.
Guess when successful people start? Yep. Now.
Dating isn't weird because of the apps. It's weird because of us.
We overthink, overanalyze, and wait for perfect timing. So here's my challenge: surprise yourself.
Message the person you almost skipped, say yes to the date you might have talked yourself out of, and remember—if you want someone to kiss by New Year's Eve, the work starts long before the leaves begin to change.
Remember my 1-100 scale? Use it. It works again and again to help you be objective.
Respond to this email with "I want 25% off" in the subject line! Offer ends Sunday.
You know what that means? You basically want a strategy and your love life to do a 180. Yep, it works!
